When Hawaiians broke kapu, the ancient laws, they would flee to a puuhonua, or place of refuge, where they could be absolved by a priest and kept safe from punishment. One of the last of these still to be maintained is Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park, the Place of Refuge, on the west coast of the Big Island. There, canopied by tall palm trees, is a retreat of white sand, volcanic rock, inland ponds, and sea life, all together in a quiet sanctuary surrounded by a protective rock wall. It serves as a reminder to take a step away, seek a moment of peace, and make a fresh start, ideally with a sip of our Place of Refuge blend as your companion.
